MRI

Image

We are the most comprehensive and experienced MRI center in the area with Open MRI, High-Field Short-Bore MRI, and the only 3T MR scanner in Northeastern Pennsylvania. From neuroimaging to vascular exams to musculoskeletal and abdominal imaging, our 3T Ultrahigh-Field MRI provides you with superior images and shortened scan times.

What is MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a method of obtaining detailed pictures of internal body structures without the use of radiation or radioactive substances of any kind.

This is accomplished by placing the patient in a very strong magnetic field while ordinary radio waves are pulsed on and off. This causes the body to emit its own radio signals which vary according to tissue characteristics. These signals are picked up by a sensitive antennas and fed to a computer which produces detailed images of the body for interpretation by specially trained Radiologists.

Why did my doctor recommend an MRI?

MRI can detect many abnormalities, especially those involving soft tissue, bone, and the Brain. In fact, MRI may reduce the need for biopsies, exploratory surgery, and other diagnostic procedures which carry associated risk.

Is it safe?

We screen patients for their personal and surgical histories before each MRI is performed because of all the contraindications associated with MRI. We take no chances with your safety and some people even joke about the screening procedure being "the hardest part" of the MRI.

Beyond this, you will be asked to secure all valuables may be asked to change into a hospital gown or you may wear an ordinary sweatsuit with no clasps, zippers, or foil stitching.

In addition, please do not wear eye make-up if any type of Brain MRI is ordered. You may be asked to remove the make-up before the exam begins.

You will be escorted into the MR room and placed on the scan table. One of the antennas mentioned earlier may need to be positioned on, near, or around the body part being examined.

You will be placed into the MR scanner so the body part being imaged is at the center of the machine. During the exam you will hear a loud tapping sounds. Hearing protection will have already been given to you to reduce the ambient souns of the MR scanner. Hearing protection will either be in the form of ordinary earplugs or headphones for music listening.

You are welcome to bring along your favorite CD to enjoy during your examination, or you may also select from recordings available at Northeastern Pennsylvania Imaging Center.

The MRI exam

You have an important role in producing the high quality images for which we have a reputation. Please try to follow the Technologist's instructions as best as possible and let them know of any difficulty you experience.

Most often, all you need to do is remain still. However, there are times when images must be obtained while breath-holding. Again, these instructions will have been given before you enter the MR scanner.

The average sequence time is 5 minutes. The complete examination may last 30 to 60 minutes depending on what type of exams are ordered.
